What is the zodiac?
Your sun sign is the slice of the zodiac the Sun was crossing on your birthday. The zodiac is the Sun’s yearly path around the sky, cut into twelve equal signs counted from the spring equinox. Astrologers have used the same twelve for more than two thousand years, and the dates come from the Sun itself.
The twelve sun signs
Each sign has its own page: its dates, its place in the structure below and its history. Don’t know yours? The sun sign finder works it out from your birthday, cusp days included.

What is a sun sign?
Seen from Earth, the Sun creeps eastward against the background stars by about a degree a day, and in a year it goes all the way round. That yearly path is called the ecliptic, and the zodiac is the band of sky along it. Astrology cuts the band into twelve equal signs of 30°, counted from the point where the Sun stands at the March equinox. Your sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born. Nothing more mysterious than that. 1,2
Ptolemy, writing in Alexandria in the second century, admits that a circle has no natural starting point and then starts at the spring equinox anyway. That choice ties the twelve signs to the seasons rather than to the stars: Aries always opens the northern spring, Cancer always begins at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox and Capricorn at the December solstice. 2,3
A sun sign is only the first line of a birth chart. The Moon, the rising sign and every planet sit in signs of their own, and astrologers read them together. The sun sign became the famous one for a practical reason: it is the only placement you can work out from a birthday alone, with no clock and no almanac. That is also why newspapers could print one column for everyone born in the same month. 4
How the twelve signs are made
The structure every sign page on this site builds on.
The signs are named after constellations, but they are not the same thing. Constellations are star pictures of all sizes; signs are equal slices of 30°. When the Babylonians fixed the twelve, the slices and the pictures roughly lined up. Earth’s axis wobbles slowly, like a spinning top, so the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars, and over two thousand years signs and constellations have slid most of a sign apart. NASA adds that the Sun actually crosses thirteen constellations: the Babylonians left out Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, to fit a twelve-month calendar. 1,5
That drift is why there are two zodiacs. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, measured from the equinox and so tied to the seasons; it is the one used by newspaper horoscopes, by this site and by the machine. The sidereal zodiac, used in Indian astrology, measures from the stars instead, which puts most people’s sidereal sun sign one sign earlier than their tropical one. Neither is a measurement error. They answer different questions: where the Sun was against the seasons, or against the stars. 1
The dates move a little from year to year. A year is about 365¼ days, not 365, so the moment the Sun enters a sign slides by roughly six hours each year and jumps back with every leap day. The change happens at one instant for the whole world, which can be the evening of one date in Los Angeles and the next morning in Tokyo. That is why one website starts Leo on July 22 and another on July 23, and why the machine’s own tables give spans such as “July 22, 23 or 24”. Born on one of those days, you are on the cusp, and the exact minute decides.
Two old groupings give the twelve their shape. Ptolemy set the signs in four triangles of three, each sign 120° from the next, and later astrologers named the triangles after the four elements: fire, earth, air and water. He also sorted them by the seasons, which is where the three modalities come from: a sign that opens a season (cardinal), one in the middle of it (fixed) and one at its end, already changing (mutable). Four elements times three modes makes twelve, and no two signs share both. 2
Each sign also has a ruling planet, its “house” in Ptolemy’s word. He gave Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon, then shared the five planets he could see out in mirror pairs on either side. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, found in 1781, 1846 and 1930, were later handed Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio by modern astrologers, while the old rulers kept their claim. 2,6,7,8

- Ancientc. 1000–450 BCEBabylonian astronomers built the zodiac out of eighteen reference star groups over about a thousand years; by around 450 BCE it had settled into twelve equal zones along the path of the Moon and planets. 5
- AncientBabylonian eraThe first sign starts out as two figures. Babylonian astronomers see a farm worker, the Hired Man, and a sheep in these stars, and late Babylonian texts call the sign Agru. 9,10
- Ancient419 BCEA Babylonian text dated 419 BCE is the first known to list all twelve zodiac signs. 11
- Ancient410 BCEThe earliest known horoscopes, from Babylon and Nippur, date to this year. 5
- Classical27 BCE–14 CESuetonius says the emperor Augustus made his horoscope public and struck a silver coin with Capricorn on it, the sign he was said to be born under. 12
- Classical2nd century CEPtolemy, working in Alexandria, writes the Tetrabiblos. It gives each sign a ruling planet, groups the signs in triangles of three and sets out the angles between signs that astrologers still use. 3,2
- Medieval12th centuryThe Persian astrologer Abu Ma'shar (died 886) is read in Latin across Europe; the University of Edinburgh holds a 12th-century Latin copy of his introduction to astrology. 13
- Medievalc. 1387–1400The Canterbury Tales opens in April, with the young Sun having run half its course through the Ram. Chaucer's readers were expected to know what that meant. 14
- 1600sc. 1601In Twelfth Night, Sir Andrew says Taurus rules the sides and heart and Sir Toby insists it's the legs and thighs. Both are wrong by the almanacs: a doctor's folding almanac made in England around 1464 gives Taurus the neck. 15,16
- 1700s1781William Herschel finds Uranus, at first taking it for a comet or a star. Ptolemy's scheme had handed Aquarius to Saturn, the farthest planet he could see. 6,2
- 1800s1846Neptune becomes the first planet found by mathematics: Le Verrier works out where it should be, and Galle finds it on his first night of looking. Ptolemy's scheme had given Pisces to Jupiter. 7,2
- 1800s1890The first number of Alan Leo's Astrologer's Magazine goes on sale in July 1890. Annual subscribers get a free horoscope with a short reading: astrology by post, for ordinary readers. 17

- 1930s1930–1937R. H. Naylor's horoscope for the newborn Princess Margaret runs in the Sunday Express on 24 August 1930 and becomes a regular column. By 1937 it is organised by the twelve sun signs, and newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic follow. 4
- 1930sFebruary 1930Pluto is found on photographic plates at Lowell Observatory, the same year Naylor's horoscope column begins. Ptolemy's scheme, which gives Scorpio to Mars, was written about seventeen centuries before anyone knew Pluto was there. 8,2

- 1960s1968The Broadway cast album of Hair opens with Aquarius. A Library of Congress essay traces the age of Aquarius idea to a gathering of the Moon and five planets in the constellation on 2 February 1962. 19
- 1980s–90s1980–1999Computers take over the arithmetic. Astrodienst in Zürich, whose founder had been writing astrology software since 1979, starts selling colour birth charts in 1980, goes online in 1996 and adds free daily horoscopes in 1999. 20
- 2010s2016NASA publishes a short explainer: the Sun crosses thirteen constellations, the Babylonians picked twelve to fit a twelve-month calendar, and "we didn’t change any zodiac signs". 1
- Today2024A Pew Research Center survey finds that 30% of US adults consult astrology, tarot or a fortune teller at least once a year, mostly for fun, with whole astrology cultures on TikTok and other platforms. 21
Three things most people don’t know
Aries began as a farmhand
Before it was a ram, the first sign was a man and a sheep. Babylonian astronomers saw a farm worker they called the Hired Man in these stars, standing with a sheep, and late Babylonian texts name the sign Agru after him. The Ram came later. 9,10
The Tropic of Cancer is in Taurus
The line on the map is named for the sign the Sun stood in at the June solstice when the name was coined. The slow wobble of Earth’s axis has since carried that point into Taurus, as NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day explains, but the line kept the Crab’s name. 22
The newspaper horoscope began with a royal birth
In August 1930 the Sunday Express asked R. H. Naylor to cast a horoscope for the newborn Princess Margaret. Readers liked it so much that it became a weekly column, and by 1937 it was sorted by the twelve sun signs. Nearly every horoscope column since has followed that pattern. 4
Questions people ask
What is my sun sign?
Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on your birthday. Look up your birthday in the table above, or use the sun sign finder, which checks the exact minute the Sun changed sign in your birth year.
Why do websites give different dates for my sign?
The Sun enters each sign at a different minute every year, and the date depends on the time zone. A sign that starts on July 22 in one year can start on July 23 the next. The machine’s tables, which run from 1950 to 2030, give Leo’s first day as July 22, 23 or 24.
Is there a 13th sign, Ophiuchus?
There is a 13th constellation on the Sun’s path, Ophiuchus, which the Babylonians left out when they made twelve equal signs. Western astrology still uses twelve signs measured from the equinox, so Ophiuchus is not a sign in it. NASA’s own summary is that it “didn’t change any zodiac signs”; it only did the maths.
What is the difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiac?
The tropical zodiac starts at the spring equinox and follows the seasons. The sidereal zodiac, used in Indian astrology, follows the stars. Because Earth’s axis has drifted for two thousand years, the two now disagree by most of a sign, so many people have a different sidereal sun sign.
What are the elements and modalities?
They are the two groupings that give the twelve signs their structure. The elements (fire, earth, air, water) group the signs in four triangles of three. The modalities (cardinal, fixed, mutable) group them by where they fall in a season. Each sign has one of each, and no two signs have the same pair.
Where did horoscope columns come from?
From a 1930 British newspaper. R. H. Naylor’s horoscope for the newborn Princess Margaret in the Sunday Express became a regular column, and by 1937 it was organised by sun signs. Newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic copied the format.
Is astrology a science?
No. NASA describes astrology as the belief that the positions of stars and planets can influence human events, and says it is not considered a science. Astrology is a tradition with a long, well-documented history, and that history is what this page sets out. The Midway Machine’s card is made for entertainment and self-reflection.
