What is the Ascendant, or rising sign?

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute and place you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time and birthplace. It marks the start of the first house and is the most personal point in a birth chart.

The point that names the horoscope

As Earth turns, the whole zodiac wheels over the eastern horizon once a day. The exact degree crossing the horizon at a given moment is the Ascendant; the sign it falls in is the rising sign. Because all twelve signs rise in about 24 hours, each one takes roughly two hours to clear the horizon, faster or slower depending on the sign and your latitude. 1

The Greek word for it was hōroskopos, the hour-marker or hour-watcher, from hōra, hour, and skopos, one who watches. The whole chart, and eventually the word horoscope itself, was named after this one point. 2,3

The opposite point, setting in the west, is the Descendant. Together with the Midheaven above and the IC below they are the four angles, which ancient writers treated as the most powerful places in a chart. Manilius, a Roman poet of the 1st century CE, said their influence was the greatest his science knew. 4

What astrologers read into it

Modern astrologers usually describe the rising sign as the face you show: first impressions, manner, the way you meet the world. The Sun is said to describe what you are, the Moon what you need, and the Ascendant how you come across. In traditional astrology it also starts the count of houses, so the rising sign decides which part of the sky stands for money, home, partners and work.

The planet that rules the rising sign is often called the ruler of the chart. Someone with Libra rising, for example, has Venus as their chart ruler, whatever their sun sign.

How the machine works it out

Calculated facts only, worked out the same way the machine does it.

  • With a birth time and birthplace, the machine computes local sidereal time from the longitude, then the ecliptic degree on the eastern horizon from the latitude and the tilt of Earth's axis.
  • Without a birthplace there is no Ascendant: the card says so rather than guess, and leaves the houses out.
  • The rising sign moves through all twelve signs in a day, so a birth time out by an hour can change it.

Common misconceptions

“Rising sign and sun sign are the same thing.” They are only the same if you were born around sunrise, when the Sun itself was on the eastern horizon.

“You can work out a rising sign from a birth date.” You need the time to within a few minutes and the place. The same date gives all twelve rising signs over 24 hours. 1

Questions people ask

Why does my rising sign need my birthplace?

Because the horizon depends on where you stand. Latitude decides how fast each sign rises, and longitude sets the local time of the sky.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Then the rising sign is unknown. Some astrologers guess one from events in a life, which is called rectification.

Is the Ascendant the same as the first house?

It is the first house's starting point. In whole-sign houses the entire rising sign is the first house. 1,6

Where does the word horoscope come from?

From the Greek hōroskopos, the hour-marker, the old name for the Ascendant. 2
