What is a moon sign?

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in when you were born. Astrology reads it as your emotional self. The Moon moves through a whole sign in about two and a half days, so the machine needs your birth time, unless the Moon stayed in one sign for that entire day.

The fastest thing in the chart

The Moon goes round Earth in about 27 days, so it crosses all twelve signs in that time and spends roughly two and a half days in each. It moves about 13° a day, as far in an hour as the Sun moves in a day. That speed is why two people born on the same date can have different moon signs, and why a moon sign usually needs a birth time. 1,2

Your moon sign is simply the sign of the zodiac the Moon stood in at your birth, measured the same way as the sun sign, as a position on the ecliptic.

What astrologers read into it

The Sun and Moon are the two lights of a chart, and astrologers have always read them as a pair: the Sun as the conscious self and will, the Moon as feeling, instinct, habit and what you need to feel safe. Many modern astrologers say the moon sign describes the person you are at home, with the door shut, more than the sun sign does.

The Moon rules Cancer, the sign Ptolemy gave it because Cancer, with Leo, sits at the warm top of the northern summer sky. 3

An old placement, not a new one

The Moon is in the oldest horoscopes we have. Babylonian birth records list the positions of the Moon and planets, and one from Uruk, for a child born in 235 BCE, notes that the Moon was "in Lion". 4,5

In Ptolemy's chapter on marriage, the Moon of one chart against the Sun of the other is the first thing to check. 6

How the machine works it out

Calculated facts only, worked out the same way the machine does it.

  • With a birth time and UTC offset, the machine reads the Moon's position at that minute.
  • Without a birth time, it checks the whole calendar day in every time zone. If the Moon stayed in one sign throughout, it names that sign; if the Moon changed sign that day, it says so instead of guessing.
  • Allowing for every time zone, 91.1% of birthdays from 1950 to 2029 could belong to either of two moon signs without a birth time.

Common misconceptions

“Everyone born on the same day has the same moon sign.” The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, often during a birthday, so the time matters. 1

“The moon sign is the moon phase you were born under.” Phase is the angle between Sun and Moon; sign is where the Moon stood in the zodiac. Different things.

Questions people ask

Can I know my moon sign without a birth time?

Often, yes: if the Moon stayed in one sign all day, wherever you were born, the answer is certain. Otherwise it is one of two.

How long does the Moon stay in a sign?

About two and a half days. 1

Which matters more, sun or moon?

Astrologers read them together; neither replaces the other.
